ActiveRain's New URL Shortener

How many times have you tried to link your ActiveRain post on Twitter or another site only to get the response that the url is too long?  Well Happy Holidays, ActiveRain has a gift for you.

Once you have written and posted a blog post you now have the option of generating a shorter url.

Simply go back into your post and click Generate short URL.  Take a look at the screen shot below:

I hope many of you find this useful and take advantage of the new url. Here is what Lenn's shortened URL looks like once we generate the shorter URL for the post in the screen shot above.

The shortened URL for this post is http://actvra.in/45. As you can see, the shorter structure uses the actvra.in domain.

In order to see how many times someone has clicked on that shortened URL, you can go to the 'statistics' area of your 'my home' page in order to track performance. It will show you how many times each shortened URL has been clicked.

And an added bonus to deal with the continual onslaught of spam......

Let's call it a stocking stuffer.  To help with the spam you may see occassionally, we've now made it so only logged in members can leave links in comments.  Our hope is that it cuts the spam down drastically.  Fingers crossed!

Happy Holidays!!!

ActiveRain Announces Listings

ActiveRain has done it again!  We've added yet another feature to enhance the AR Community.  Members now have the option of posting Listings!

Here's how:

1.  Go to http://activerain.com/action/listings and click New Listing
2.  Upload photos, enter the address, description and stats
3.  Click Save Listing
4.  Click Activate

I'm sure you're thinking to yourself, "It can't be that easy can it?"  Yes, my friends it is.

A few clarifications:

You may have up to 20 listings at any time.  Each listing will be active for 30 days.  This is to keep any stale information from being displayed.  If you make any changes to the listing, update the price, add a picture etc. the 30 days will reactivate from that day.

Each listing may have up to 20 photos.  Photos must be 960x440 at a minimum.  We encourage you to take the pictures from your digital camera to optimize clarity.

One of the following browsers must be used to post listings:  Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 8.

Listings will appear on the new Community Pages and as an added bonus of RainMaker status your listings will appear on the sidebar of your blog.

I hope everyone takes advantage of this new feature!

Let it Rain!

The ActiveRain Featured Blog Post

The ActiveRain Featured Blog Post -

I get asked everyday about the ActiveRain Featured Blog post.  The wide variety of questions range from "Who Is Featuring The Posts" to "Why Are The Same Members Featured over and over again?"  Well, it's taken me 2 1/2 years working here to finally write a post about the infamous "Featured Blog Post!"

Now some of you will agree, and some may disagree, (I wouldn't have it any other way) but at the end of the day, what really matters most is that you understand the process, the system, and have some compassion for the thankless position of those responsible for keeping that feature board going day in and day out.

So who, what, when, where, why, and how does this all work?

 The ActiveRain Feature Board

Are you kidding?  You really thought I was going to give up the secret?  Share the coveted recipe to KFC's Chicken?  Unveil the ancient Chinese secret that all proverbs were built upon?  Are you nuts?  You really thought it would be that easy to just come along and read a post and all of a sudden be the "all knowing" understander of the ActiveRain Featured Blog Post?  Sorry folks, I've held back this long, I'm not about to lay it all out there now and take the fun, the mystery, and all the guess work out of it.  Haha, had ya goin there for a sec eh?

The ActiveRain Feature Board is a living, breathing, ever-changing, powerful, and exciting AR feature.  It could possibly be one of the most important and exciting things about the entire ActiveRain RE Network.  Acquiring that sought after gold star and having your picture on the main AR page has been compared by some to being as exciting as having your picture on the cover of the "Rolling Stone!"

Why is the "Feature" such a coveted "CRAZE" here on ActiveRain?  For those with an ego, it's the recognition, for others it's the potential traffic, and the added exposure.  The opportunities a featured post can create are unbelievable.  The thought and potential of getting a featured post has created some pretty crazy frenzy's.  It's also stirred up some pretty wild and crazy far-fetched ideas and posts from some of our more "voicy" ActiveRain members. One thing is for sure, this will always be a sensative and even contraversial topic.

So how do we feature posts and are the same people getting featured too often?

First off, I want to thank you (the community) for helping us refine this delicate process of selecting posts for featured status. Since the inception of the feature board, we continually strive to refine the process in which featured posts are selected. The recent addition of the 'suggest' button is our second shot at trying to put the feature board in the hands of our members.

The first shot was over two years ago and it failed as we were unable to control it from being manipulated by folks banding together and suggesting each other for features. We believe that the newest incarnation will be more successful as the shear numbers of people suggesting posts for feature has grown significantly and the ease with which someone can manipulate it has diminished.

Add in a few additional administrative controls, now we can determine who may be trying to manipulate the system, and we believe we are getting much closer to a true community decision of what merits a feature worthy post on ActiveRain.  That being said, we still have the ultimate decision on what gets featured and all posts that are suggested for feature are reviewed by our staff prior to being featured.

(The AR Staff Moderators names will not be disclosed in this post for obvious reasons)

This sentiment has been echoed in the past, and I believe it still holds true today. There are certain members that are excellent writers. For whatever reason, and it's not because they have overtly recruited people to suggest their posts for feature, their posts get suggested for feature at a higher rate than others.  Much of it has to do with the large followings they have amassed because of the balance they have achieved in writing to consumers and also focusing on writing posts that help the community.

We have a hard time justifying penalizing these folks by keeping them off the feature board or restricting the amount of features they can have. However, I am in agreement with all members that having the same person on the feature board more than once at the same time is not the best representation of the depth of writing talent here on ActiveRain.  For this reason, we have asked our staff to be mindful of who is already on the feature board as they review the posts that have been suggested for feature.

We have also asked that they look deeper in the pool of suggested posts for members that have had very few (or no) featured posts in the past. This will help us develop the new talent on the site and allow them to amass followings that can benefit from their writing skills. We truly appreciate all our members for taking the time to voice their concerns to us, it's because of these members that ActiveRain will continue to grow and get better.

My personal ancient secret recipe for finding features

The ActiveRain Featured Blog post, just one more great example of how ActiveRain has and will continue to evolve.

New and Improved ActiveRain Leaderboard

I reblogged this post to give some additional exposure to the new ActiveRain Leaderboard.  This in my opinion is a nice supplement to the City/State pages that use to feature the ability to find specific individuals in various States under a selected category. Great job on the post Kerrie, thanks and kudos!  :-)

Via ActiveRain Corp.:

We are pleased to announce the new and improved ActiveRain Leaderboard! We couldn't have done it without the amazing feedback of our Community over the last couple of days. Thank you all so much!

ActiveRain wanted to create the best possible layout for all of our members.  A place where you can easily see how you rank within all of AR, your state, your professional group etc.

The new style is sleek and sexy...take a look.

ActiveRain Leaderboard

As you can see, I have narrowed my search down to Real Estate Agents in All States.  You can also add state, county, and city for more localization.

If you are roaming around and your name is in the list you can hit the "show me" button on the bottom right and it will take you to the page you rank on with your profile highlighted. Please keep in mind that if you are not a Loan Officer in New York and you have that specific search open, the "show me" button will not appear.

The new design will make it easier and more convenient to find what you're looking for;  whether it be a referral or simply to see where you rank amongst other members.

Another great tool is that you can access the leaderboard from your main profile.  If you click "My Home" on the top right hand side of AR you then see your smokin' hot photo with a few stats below.  The "Rank in State", "Rank in County" and "Rank in City" all link to the leaderboard.

ActiveRain is always working hard to stay on top.  We try our best to provide you with the tools you need and are asking for.  The new ActiveRain Leaderboard is our newest addition.

We hope you like it!

RainCamp San Diego - What If All 2859 Members Show Up

I am really excited about coming to Southern California for ActiveRain's RainCamp in San Diego, one of the best real estate events of the year.  This one is going to be extra special because Bob will be back joining us from his recent wedding and honeymoon.  We missed you in Portland Bob! :-)

What If All 2859 Members Show Up?  Then we'll have one heck of a party and after gathering!!

On August 5th I will be in beautiful San Diego, with three of the most influential people in real estate: Jonathan Washburn, our CEO and Founder of ActiveRain,  Mr. Ben Kinney, a Mega Agent from Seattle and now Nationally renowned speaker, and back by popular demand, Bob Stewart, ActiveRain's Community Evangelist.

At RainCamp we'll be talking about all kinds of strategies to improve your online presence and to help you earn business using the web.  No RainCamp is ever exactly the same because the local markets change and each demographic is unique to that geographic area.  Bringing in some of the local experts and talent is always exciting and a huge learning experience for us all.

At RainCamp on August 5th we will:
  • Show you how we have helped thousands of our members rank at the top of the search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) for searches in their market.
  • Share how Donna Harris, a RE/MAX agent from Austin, Texas used her blog to make $122,000 in commissions over the last two years doing what you can do in your own market.
  • Reveal how a plan and some guidance can help you use blogging to impact your business and get the same results as Donna.
  • Show you how to use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to earn more business.
  • Provide you with a day full of great info to take home with you and implement immediately!
RainCamp is brought to you by ActiveRain and we have made it possible for everyone to attend with donation based tickets.  We want everyone to have access to the information we are sharing - it's that important for the success of your business as the internet becomes more and more, a crucial part of your lead generation.

See how past RainCamp attendees are raving about how RainCamp has helped their business. You really don't want to miss an event of this magnitude, plus they really are more fun than you could ever imagine a one-day conference or seminar.

Make sure you come up to me and give me your business card with the word "RainMaker" written on it somewhere,  I'll have a cool surprise for you if you do.
(this is the only time or place I'll mention this, so don't forget)

Click here to register.  Seating is limited so secure your seat today.  See you there!

Who's Calling The Shots on ActiveRain - The New "Called Shots" Feature

We have a new feature which I'm sure many of you have already noticed on your "MY HOME" pages.

Since we released the new "SUGGEST" for feature button, we've been getting a really good response from members helping us to find and report suggested content for the ActiveRain Feature Board.  You'll notice today that we've placed a new metric "CALLED SHOTS" counter in the status area of each members "my home" page. This little tracker tool will tally a total of how many posts you suggest that actually get featured.

Calling a shot simply means you've selected a post by another member that you feel should be featured

To do this, you would have to have clicked on the "SUGGEST" button in the upper right corner of their blog post.  If you suggest a members Blog post to be featured, and it is selected, then you will have "Called The Shot" and get the kudos.  When a member accumulates enough "Called Shots" they'll earn a new badge.

In order to prevent gaming, members may only suggest a maximum of 5 posts per day, so be careful calling your shots, don't waste them, we may have some additional surprises and rewards for those members "calling the most shots" around here.

Thank you for helping us keep the network growing and for keeping the community fun!  Your support in suggesting features has been awesome, and is making a huge difference for our moderators and for the variety and quality of content that our visitors and traffic are being exposed to while visiting ActiveRain.

ActiveRain's NEW "Suggest For Feature" Button

Today we launched a new button on ActiveRain.  The "Suggest Feature" button.

With the volume of great content and fantastic Blog posts being submitted daily from our RainMakers, we have created a new and powerful tool that allows members of the community to make suggestions for posts and articles they feel should be featured on our home page. This is a very powerful new tool, and with great power, comes great responsibility.  :-)  It is similar to the new Facebook "LIKE" button that we recently added.

As long as I can remember, the controversy of what does, and does not get featured has seemed a mystery or at best, a guess.  ActiveRain's moderators have done a fabulous job in my opinion of sifting through the thousands of daily posts that go up on our network.  It is a very difficult and time consuming task, and it's no longer humanly possible for us to review every post submitted by members for a potential feature.

The ActiveRain Community has been built and established based partly on our members "ideas and suggestions" and we're not changing our culture now!  We are looking to our members, and the thousands of eyes (instead of just the few of our own)  to suggest and submit to us, any posts you feel are worthy and have good content for our Feature Board.  Now YOU (our community) can help us moderate and play a significant huge role in what our community stands for and represents.

By clicking on the new button, you'll be endorsing that member's Blog post, and sending us a link to consider for the coveted and infamous golden star.  When you click on it, nothing will happen except the button will turn Grey.  Behind the scenes, it will send the link to our staff for their review and possible selection.  So here's your chance to help run the ActiveRain Feature Board.  There is no limit to the amount of posts you can suggest to be featured, but you can only select the same post one time.

You may also notice that the "Flag" this post icon is no longer available at the bottom of each Blog post, we're currently working on a replacement option for reporting members concerns and flagging posts.

Our hope is that before members suggest a post, they'll keep in mind the culture, "The ActiveRain Weltanschauung" and the "Community Guidelines" upon which this network and vibrant community were created and built.  What "BEST" represents not only ActiveRain and our community, but what Best represents us as an Industry.  I truly believe that giving more of this decision to our members via this new option will benefit us all as a whole.

YOU have been "The Voice" of AR since its inception, and now YOU can be the "Eyes and Ears" as well.  As we start relying more heavily on member suggestions, you may notice a change in the type of posts that make up the feature board. We're looking forward to your responses and responsiveness, and we're also excited about witnessing where this will take us in the future with the ActiveRain Feature Board. :-)
