Last week I wrote a post on Effectively Posting Your Listings to Your Blog. I shared a few tips on how to write blogs posts about your listings to appeal to both consumers & also search
engines. I also shared a few things that will hurt your chances of a consumer coming back repeatedly to your blog.
Many of you have seen the recent influx of points so generously being given away by Bob. The only logical thing for me to do was be more generous. Unfortunately, since I am still the new guy in the community builder realm of ActiveRain, I have been put on a quota of points to award per month. Unlike Bob & Brad who have been given the platinum cards with unlimited amounts, I've only been given the gold card which I found out quickly does have a maximum limit.
That being said, I decided that since I can't give everyone 10,000 points, I could at least host a contest! Besides, who doesn't love contests? The last one that Jason Crouch sponsored had over 80 entries! I wonder if this contest can break that? So, without further ado, here are the details:
- Contest starts today & runs through Midnight CST August 31st.
- All entries must be written after time of this post.
- All entries must be linked into the comment section of this post. Entries that are not left in the comment section of this post will not be awarded any points.
- Posts that look like they have been copied & pasted from the MLS or any other Newsletter service will be disqualified from the contest & not receive any bonus points.
- You may enter as many times as you wish, but will only receive points for 1 entry.
- At the end of August 31st, a Panel of staff judges will chose the top 10 posts. The top 10 posts will then be placed into a poll where the members of ActiveRain will chose First, Second, & Third Place winners.
- Points will be awarded as follows:
- 1st Place: 10,000 points
- 2nd Place: 5,000 points
- 3rd Place: 2,500 points
- Top 10 Finalists: 1,500 points
- Just Entering Contest: 500 points
- The top 10 finalists & also winners of this contest will not be based upon the listing itself. In other words, it doesn't matter if your post is about a 10 million dollar mansion, or a $10,000 piece of land. The winners will be based upon the quality of the post, additional content about the surrounding areas, & use of extras like video & slideshows. Creativity & content will out weigh design & layout.
- Lastly, your posts will be judged upon grammar & spelling, so make sure to use the spell checker & proofread your post. Posts containing several spelling errors or typos may be removed from the contest.
Best of luck to everyone & I look forward to many awesome entries!

Grammar and spelling are sexy. I hope they are weighted heavily. Nothing bothers me quite as much as reading a new listing with a "hugh garage".
New listing coming soon:
REO property in Cathedral City, CA
3 Bedroom, 2 Bath home built in 1992
This is a very nice home in a great neighborhood and will be on the market in the next two weeks - get ready for the bidding! Nice to know that you AR members have an inside scoop on a home that is still two weeks from being listed.
I'm the first to enter the contest - and have inside information only for AR members.
Good luck to all entries for the contest!
Featured @ Club Chaos
I love contests, I love points and I love showing off my listings. Look for a great entry from me soon.
I'm confused. Is this a contest to see who can come up with the best listing announcement? Does it have to be a real listing, or can one make it up?
By the way, the recently concluded "Nature & Marketing" contest had 226 entries. Voting on the winners will be by ActiveRain members and will probably start this coming Monday. I'm still organizing the entries.
Jeremy - Are you trying to beat the 80-entry mark by offering twice as many points? Well, it might just work. :) I need to give this one some thought. Good stuff!
Jer...
Oh boy, the wheels are spinning already! I have this great parcel in Macon and ... never mind, you'll just have to wait!
Jeremy ---since I don't actively list and sell --- but, oh, that's right, all of the listings of my office really are mine --- so I have will have to come up with something for this contest. Thanks.
Palm Springs- You need to write a blog post about the listing & then leave a link here to your post. Writing a brief description of a listings does not count.
JB, you gotta hook up the Loan Officers on AR too. Show some love.
Russel- This contest is for actual properties that are listed for sale. Do not worry, there will be some other big contests coming in the near future with big points for inspectors, & those in the mortgage industry.
David- see my comment above.
Jeremy,
Maybe you'll be the number one gatherer of the most postings for your contest.
But I know it's hurricane season and you might get caught up in Mother Nature. Don't let any of the entries blow away.
Margaret
Jeremy - HOLY %$#^! You guys are just throwing points at us, aren't you?? I LOVE IT! Almost to 100K today. AFter this comment I think I only have 10 more points. Eek! I'm giddy.
You do realize you're creating point junkies, dont you?
Contests make me nervous and cause me anxiety, but this one is tempting ;-) It's a great idea and I look forward to seeing what some folks are able to come up with.
-C
Now to see which listing I haven't pushed out in awhile. Could it be a recent sale also?
Jeremy I have no active listings - my last one settled today. Can I do a blog about it? My listings don't hang around. Karen
Hi Jeremy~ The hard part is deciding which one to enter in the contest!
Jeremy, do we have to get our US dictionary out or is our Canadian spelling OK.
Jeremy,
This sounds like a great way to get listing agents movitvated. I can't wait to see the entries. We can all learn just from watching!
Well, this is one way to get me to finally edit all the video footage from my last 2 listings so I can embed the videos in my listing posts.
Jeremy: I'd like to see a contest for the rest of us as well. This is for realtors. How about one for loan officers, etc?
Jeremy ~ This sounds like fun. I did use your advise and posted 2 new listings last week all done by me and NO copy paste business. I didn't know you shouldn't do that until you pointed it out last week. Maybe I can win something here! I just reached the 40,000 mark which in nothing compared to a bunch of others but I am getting there slowly.
500 points for just entering the contest. Where do I sign up? Count me in Jeremy. Thanks for sharing. Great post.
Instead of AR points, could I get a sale from my post? ; )
Jeremy, just as I leave to go out of town. Dang. but I'm happy I read this because I missed your post on how to post our listings. That is worth points to me if it helps me write them better! Happy Weekend!
Oh goodie! LOL. and Oh shoot. I wrote a post about a listing on the last round(the Bob points round). along with the neighborhood info. I guess I'll just pick another one. Can't miss out on a super points contest now can I? ~Rita
All of these contests are really starting to distort the points system. We should be writing hyperlocal content because it's good for our business, not because the AR Team is throwing points thousands of points at us.
Let's see I have a whole slew of listings from nine units left to sell in a condo building, to a FSBO, to at least one active detached home. Hmmm this could be interesting.
Does a property for lease count? Does it have to be our listing?
I can't wait to see all the entries. I need to go back and read your post before I get started....
Have a great weekend!
Ann
Paul- As I stated earlier, do not fear, there will be some big point contests for you guys as well!
Tim- if it is something you have listed, it counts as a listing. Doesn't matter whether it is for sale or for lease. But, it does need to be your own listing.
Oh, boy. I need to go out and get a listing. Do you think me getting 10,000 points will be incentive enough for them to finally sign on the dotted line!?!
Lesley- I would prefer it be something you currently have listed for sale.
I'm a Realtor but specialize in Manufactured Homes. However, even though I'm also a manufactured home dealer and general contractor our niche isn't about listings. We're foundation inspection, installation, retrofit and repair specialists. We work with real estate brokers and lenders who are in need of engineered certifications affidavits of affixuture and 433a documentation (Calif only) nationwide. In fact we are the largest company in the United States offering this service.
Intrestingly as a Realtor and Manufactured Home Dealer we do from time to time take listings but this is not our bread and butter. Would we be a fit for this contest. Also do the listings all have to be on MLS? If so that leaves us out of the loop as we are not currently using MLS because we don't actively promote our real estate and dealership end of the business. We take listings if they come our way but we don't actively solicit them.
Can we still play?
You may reach me at onthelevel@cox.net or log on to our website at www.onthelevelcontractors.com or call me on my cell anytime at 760 419-3635.
John & Janis- You can participate in this contest with any of your listings. Feel free to participate!
Jeremy, I'm loving it. I work much better when I get free points.
Jeremy, I guess I don't understand why I can't use a listing that was on the MLS this morning, but is sold this afternoon. I have all of the marketing data on it including a video and the community links. It would appear it would be best if it was still languishing on the market. :) Karen
Karen- Has the listing already closed? I know here in SC the listing isn't sold till the deed records, so that is the rules I am using for this contest :)
I don't take listings :-( I'm an EBA . . . but I love contests! Would I want 10,000 --- WOOD EYE!!
Jeremy Due to an error in the purchasers check it will not be recorded until next Tuesday or Wednesday. Thank you - it will be entered Art Kruschka
Hey Jeremy -- The Home Stagers on A/R love contests too! Please remember us in one of your upcoming contests :-)
Points for doing good things that we should be doing anyway....kind of like tax breaks from the Congress...tying to get us do what they want.
Only more fun.
Jeremy, thanks for this great contest......I love points....I know which listing I will do.....
Love it, wait till you see my condo in raleigh
Jeremy,
First and foremost, I'm glad to see this post because I missed your article about effectively marketing our listings on our blog. So, I'm definitely going to read that.
You know, the contests are great and the points are great, but these challenges and contests have REALLY helped me be a better blogger/marketer. So, I'm in!
Jeremy:
Being an exclusive buyer broker, I have no listings and am, therefore, the black sheep of this contest. But, best of luck to everyone who submits. I will be reading with interest.
Jeremy, Looks like another good contest. Here's my entry:
Foreclosure peice of crap for sale. The inside is worse than the outside. Must see to believe!!
This is my GOOD listing!
Now give me some points......I'm busy :)
I love talking about my listings and posting about them- the hard part is deciding which one to enter. Can we enter more than 1? I know that in other contests you can...
I might have to tool up one of my listings for this... I have a lot of collateral on a few of them.
Wow, I was going to ask the same thing as Christine. I am not a Realtor, so I don't have any listings, but I was curious as to how many different listings you could post. This could mean a lot of exposure and many "happy sellers" out there.
This is awesome, Jeremy!
@Bryant Tutas LOL My 6 year old daughter is loving your foreclosure property. NOT!
I already post all my listings. Gee, now i have to go get another one.
tee hee
Doing 2 CMA's over the weekend, hopefully one at least will be on the market before August 31.
That is a boat load of points !!
Would love a contest for the Home Stagers - don't forget about us!! We generally have some GREAT posts to share!
Hi Jeremy,
I've just posted a new listing for a loft and here is the link [...]
I'm quite curious to see the results, and to read the judges comments.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Sign me up! I'm ready to increase my points and get my listings some additional visibility. The big challenge is to post without cutting and pasting.
Hey I am like Missy...but luckily have not posted my latest listing. Just going to do what I usually do but will enter it in the contest. Thanks for the challenge.
Bookmarked! And I have 3 new listings that need posting! Perfect timing.
AR members love contests Jeremy and this one should be fun. What competitive souls we are, even the AR team builders compete to see who can give away the most points! LOL!
ykes where to begin... ok count me in... this is good.. thanks
I love contests, they inspire me to do great things in my mind and on the web. You can count me in!
I surprised there aren't more entries all ready....just wait, everyone is perfecting their entry!
Hmmmm, sounds like a fun contest to be involved in.
Patricia Aulson/portsmouth nh
Yeehaw - nothing like a good challenge to get the creative juices flowing!
Jeremy,
I'm going t have to vote for Bryant. It's eye catching and it's funny.
Brian
Here is my first listing blog on active rain.... http://activerain.com/blogsview/1205678/marco-island-sands-b404-beach-views-
Jeremy: This sounds like a great way to rack up those points. I hope you give us the directions in baby steps.
Lori's listing:
http://activerain.com/blogsview/1205540/4-bedroom-4-acres-4-car-garage-4-sale-tulsa-oklahoma-300-000-1727-s-151-e-avenue
Paul beat me to it - way to go Paul! A point contest for us loan officer type people ;-)
Lucky me. I have a couple of new listings that I've been needing to do posts about. As if the exposure wasn't incentive enough, I now have this. Thanks.
This is fantastic! I can't wait to give this a whirl!
Hi Jeremy, I has thiss grate nu listin but whn you was saying that the spellin and that ther grmmer stuff has a be good, i knews rite then that I has no chnse. Cuse im justen one of tham thar realerter folks whoot gots no lernin.
I'm not here for the points!!! Yeah, right!!! Another contest!!! Yay
Jeremy, Just three weeks into AR, I might have to get a few more blogs up before I tackle a contest, but will be there soon. I wanna' be with the big kids!
Bryant, that's to much - LOL! That was perfect. It is honest and to the point, definetly no puffing.
HAHA!
I vote for Bryant!
Ugh!! I had just gotten passed over for the perfect listing last week...I still have the slideshow and video for it...drat...I'll have to come up with a few before my daughter's birthday the following Monday.....
Looking forward to this one....
Jeremy,
Don't forget about the video professionals! Good luck everyone!
OK, I hope to have one on Monday, which should just give me enough time. Otherwise I have to drag out one of my other listings and go for it.
And for the record, my laptop screen is now all spotted with coffee droplets, the keys will be sticky forever. Thanks to Broker Bryant that is... that last comment of his was a killer... "now give me some points - I'm busy". That sent me right over the edge!
Good contest Jeremy, not that the points mean anything... YEAH... RiGHT!
Marcia- Don't be afraid! What a greater place to start then with an easy contest about one of your listings! You can do it!
Can I add a listing I have, RE DOING it, of course...no cut and paste job????
Jeremy...another great contest. I just posted a new listing...geewhiz...I have another one I can use...
Hi Jeremy,
Sounds like fun!
I have a question....."does it have to be a current listing....or can we use one we've had before?
Advise please.
Patricia Aulson/portsmouth nh
Jeremy, that is a huge collection of points to award. I am still laughing at Broker Bryant's photo. I told a guy at lunch about all these contests about points and he asked me do people really care so much about points? From observing the behavior among many Members here, I would say, definitely so!!
BB has the best listings in Florida! LMAO
Jeremy, it's like the AR staff is trying to out do each other with the contests. Let the games begin. Bryant's photo is similar to something I viewed yesterday.
This is my first contest. I'm excited and a little confused. I have to put my thinking hair on!!! I'm confused a little because right after I became a rainmaker I received an email from an AR person that sent me to a page. This page basically said how stupid agents are to waste time on AR, Trulia and website templates. It noted how points were a kids game basically and we agents looked ridiculous for playing along. I think there's benefit here but a little wary that I get this message only after joining AR.
Back to putting my thinking cap/hair on for the contest. :-)
I wish the darn contest was earlier this month when I got 4 new listings! Looks like the timing is off:)
I will enter it to win it. . I intend to raise the bar from a normal listing using virtual tours and pictures to something spectacular! . . this will be my new template for all my listings to come. .
Kat- Yes, you can use redo something you previously used. Just make sure you are writing something completely new & fresh.
Patricia- The reason behind the contest isn't so much for the points. The reason is to help you hone your skills on writing a blog post about a specific property. Therefore, you want to use something you currently have listed for sale instead of something you already sold.
Ed- Not only are our member competitive, but the staff is rather competitive too :)
Bev & Bob- The numerous success stories for ActiveRain speak for themself. Thousands of our members have written about their successes. I would definitely suggest taking a minute to read some of their Success Stories
Bill- Don't worry! If you have a current listing that you already wrote about, it is fine to use that listing again! Just write something new & fresh & incorporate some of the ideas I listed in the post above & you have a great chance of winning!
Fernando- I can't wait to see what you come up with!
BB's got the best listings - I can't compete but I'll give it a go! I guess you're looking for us to be imaginative huh? Spell things right too? Shucks.
Hi Jer! Do you know how many homes I've sold as a result of posting listings to AR?! You are so right about the success stories and I, for one, love the fact that you're doing this--I think everyone who has listings should be focused on getting them posted here and bringing themselves more and more Google, Yahoo, Bing, MSN...juice!! Love all of the points you're offering and remember--everyone one is a winner with these contests because we learn so much from those who enter. GREAT contest and I do hope I can get a new listing to feature in this! If not, I'll use one that I already have.
Have a great weekend...
OOPS! I forgot to mention--you'll SOON get that platinum card! ;-)
Below is the link to my entry, I hope you enjoy it.

"Let me find a New Home for your Family, or a New Family for your Home!"
Jeremy - I think this is a great idea ! We do a lot of blogs about our listings. In fact, we include that in our marketing plan from the beginning ! Hopefully we will get a new listing or find the time to blog about an older one to submit prior to the end of the month !
Jeremy, I've had a time figuring it all out but I think I have it now. Lisiting goes in the blog post, link goes in the comment.
Hopefully I can get this done while working around my continuing ed!
Hi Jeremy,
This is a great idea and has spurred me on to get about 4 of our listings finally up on Active Rain! I've just been putting it off and procrastinating.
Here's the link for the first one: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1206567/home-for-sale-117-belmont-drive-hendersonville-nc
Oh, can we do more than 1 entry?
Thanks,
Sue of Robin and Sue
I would love the 10,000 points! I am going to look into this!
Jeremy This post has
It is #1 on Google for the keywords "detached home montclair" and several other keyword combinations
Custom Detached Home Montclair Country Club Dumfries VA
What if we work primarily with buyers? Listing post, but before the contest. Well I guess it is time to do another.
Jeremy - This is a great motivator for us to get a listing. The points are very generous. I have to put my thinking cap on.
Jeremy,
Great contest. Here is my entry:
Conover NC Brick Ranch on 1.65 Acres
Thanks,
Mike Kelly Jr Team
Sure this sounds like a good excuse to show off a new listing- I would like to play too
Sure this sounds like a good excuse to show off a new listing- I would like to play too
Love Bryant's entry. You should give him some bonus point! I have to go and get new listings also...... Sadly the next one I have won't be on market until September. When does the contest end? Oh! I had better hurry up!
The perfectionist part of me is so excited that you are judging on grammar and spelling -- thank you!
Jeremy- you might want to take a look at your Effectively Posting Your Listings To Your Blog post- lots of typos!!
Gosh, everything I listed sold with the Obama stimulus! But have a nice one coming up on the border! I'll write about that one. Would love to blog/list properties from Mexico! Is this allowed??
Jeremy,
Testing us all for sure. Here's my entry. This was fun to think outside the box and make my listings better. Thanks for all your guidance and advice. Improving the improvement process has a second level derivative in improvement that curves sharply! Ergo a better ROI! Thanks,
Jeanean
Jeremy: LOL.....I cracked up when you said "judged on grammar and spelling"..... Oh, the pressure of it all. Do the judges have their red pens out to circle the grammar errors....??? (Sorry, that term just made me think of elementary school marms that walk around the a ruler to whack your knuckles).
Barbara, I would highlight the sentence that references those great animal pixs were taken from a condo. That says a lot!
Hi Jeremy, love this Active Rain network and all that I learn here! Thanks for the new contest. will see what I can come up with. short on time these days; but I do make time to read these blogs before my family wakes up. thanks for sharing...hope to be contributor for a long time...grin

Jeremy. I am a home inspector who does not have any listings. However, I have done listing videos for agents in my area. Does that count?

Jeremy - this sounds like fun and I have a stunning entry - sorry I'm a newbie and have a newbie question, am just learning about my AR blog, do I respond to you with a 'teaser' about the listing, then create the actual piece in my blog but then, where do I find the link to add to my 'teaser' to you?
Sorry - for the basic question..............just learning. Also, hello - I'm in HHI and you, of course, are just up the road!

Jeremy Is it OK for me to post a blog advertising someone else's listing - either another agent's resale home or new homes from a builder? I've already posted mine, but I would like to submit others Karen
Jeremy,
Here is our post: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1207428/1480-foxmoor-ln-elgin-il-great-4-bedroom-on-large-fenced-corner-lot-
Sorry Karen, only your first Entry will be counted. But, in case others were wondering. It needs to be a property that you are actively marketing for sale. If it is not your listing, it will not count.
Susan- Leave a link here to your listing post that you have written on your blog. The reason for this contest is to get one of your listings some awesome exposure. Also, to help you learn how to write effective blog posts about listings. The more great content, the better your listing will do on SEO.

Jeremy,
Here is our entry for the contest as well ! Is great to see a lot of activity here. We try to make it more personal instead of the standard postlet or template regarding a listing and then use the opportunity to talk about the neighborhood as well.

This is the same entry from above just wanted to make sure link was there for you.
I implemented all of the strategies that you have shared with us in this listing example.
It has been a great learning experience. I have a template for all of my listings.
Best of luck to everyone. Look forward to more contests.

When will we get our points?
Hi Jeremy - Hope you're enjoying your vacation!! Here's my entry for the contest.
http://activerain.com/blogsview/1216307/33-peddlars-drive-the-greens-branford-connecticut-short-sale-townhouse
Jeremy, once again we lowly Loan Officers get left out ..... sigh .... sigh ...... LOL
But I'm glad to read in your response to Russel that we will get our shot, just hope you don't do it while I am on vacation for a week, and will not have much time on the computer :) :) :)
Wow...OK, I'm going to have to learn how to do this. Let me go back and look and then check out the examples from others and try my hand at it. I need more listings. I guess it's true that we learn what we focus on. I just figured that it would come along as I got more experienced but I've found that each new thing I have to budget time for to get my head around it and then incorporate it into my routine. Each time I'm asked to cover a topic in a meeting I try to pcik something that I'm NOT familiar with so that I'll have to study it enough so I look like I know what I'm talking about and that's usually how I learn new things. We teach best what we most need to learn....
I stayed away from Postlets and tried something new. Thanks for the idea.

I hope you are enjoying yourself! Get back safe so you can award some points.
Ooops, and I just found aboutit. Too late...
Do you have the winners announced.
I guess I need to watch it carefully so that I donot miss it next time. Is there going to be next time?
Jeremy, when are you going to announce the winners?
Ooooh, how did I miss this contest???? I hate missing a contest! Can't wait to see the winners!
Curious what is going on with this contest? The deadline was three weeks ago!
Not only did I miss the post about the contest - i missed the winning results!
Let the games begin! I discovered this contest after it was over, but I plan to read the posts in sequence and enjoy the ride.
Dang! When I saw BB's "good listing" it gave me a whole new reality check for Florida short sales. This man MUST be really busy!
