RainMakers Danced For Rain

In a time not long ago, when the crops were dry, and communities were losing their families and neighbors, Rainmakers were the individuals that were looked up to and counted on for saving their people.  These were the folks that in spite of tough and troubling times, were the chosen ones to dance, smile, and pray for RAIN to save their people and their crops from the drought.  Despite their predicament, they chose to have a bright and positive attitude even during one of their most challenging times ever.

"Rainmaking refers to the act of attempting to artificially induce or increase precipitation, usually to stave off drought.  In the US, rainmaking was attempted by traveling showmen. It was practiced in the old west but may have reached a peak during the dust bowl drought of the American West and Midwest in the 1930s. The practice was depicted in the 1956 film The Rainmaker." Source: Wikipedia

The Real Estate Industry has experienced a similar drought if you will.  Many of our community's crops have dried up and we are experiencing some challenging times all across this great Nation of ours.  People have lost jobs, experienced layoffs and company closures, even lost their homes and finances because of a different kind of drought.  It does no good to point fingers, place blame, or speak negatively about the situation or those who may have affected our farms and fields.  It's the clouds ahead on the horizon that are the focus...

We need to count on our "RainMakers" once again.  The folks who come to ActiveRain day in and day out, dancing, smiling, and providing "Rain" to once again save our people and our crops.  This network and community is just one small thread woven through-out the country.  It's the twine that binds and bonds us all together in some small way to collectively achieve great things out of a situation that is so much bigger than us all.  To be witness to all these great things happening around us from an on-line community is very inspiring.

In the three years I have been here, I have witnessed so many stories, so much creativity, lives being changed, and RAIN being made.  We have all been touched or moved by many of the members here in one way or another.  One day we will look back at this time and realize how much of an impact all our efforts have made in our Industry and to each of us personally.  My prediction is that one day, when the RAIN returns, and it will, that we will dance, laugh, and celebrate during the best of times, just as we are doing now during some of the more challenging times.

Is this our destiny?  Maybe this was the intention and purpose of this network all along?  Were we meant to be just another Social Network on the Internet, or an Industry of "RainMakers" making a difference?  Individuals helping to save our people, our communities, our Industry, and each other?  That's what I see happening all across the country right now.

YOU are a RainMaker.  YOU have the power and ability to lead, motivate, inspire, and help other people.  YOU are making a difference in the World, in YOUR Community, and in YOUR Industry.  YOU are the one dancing and creating "RAIN" in a time of drought when it is much needed.  The impact that YOU are making may not be realized until the day comes that we can all look back and see what an important and significant role YOU played in helping keep our people alive and strong, and our Industry together.

Hello my friend,

So good to see you dancing here yourself! Brad you were a stand-out in the beginning, and I'm one of those most fortunate myself to have made some many great friends along the way thanks to AR.

Btw, I've been looking for the RainCamp in SoCal, this month right?

Very poetic post, Brad.  This is an amazing community to be a part of.  There are so many great people, so much information, so much support, I don't know what I did without it.  And you are a big part of why it is the way it is.  So you can pat yourself on the back.  BTW there's a SoCal raincamp?  I thought the next one was DC in May?

YOU ARE THE RAINMAKERS!  Be proud, keep on dancing, and keep bringing the "RAIN!"  It's the most honorable and important thing you can be doing right now, and it is very much needed by our people!

This was a comment that Sally Cheeseman left me on an earlier post today, it was the final inspiration I needed to post this today:

Since joining Active Rain, I have learned so much that sometimes I feel as if my head will explode... and I still know so little. Coming to the Rain every day is now so much a part of my life that I could not do without it. Sometimes I just read, sometimes I comment, and of course I post as often as I feel that I have something worth posting. Thank you for being the great leader that you are.

Brad:

This is well said. As I recall in that film, Burt Lancaster was a con man who convinced everyone he was going to be able to make it rain and these beliefs changed the lives of the people in the story. Just as in business you have to believe in what you are doing, implement a plan of action and the rain will come.

I love the last paragraph. In my office, as the broker, I really am the rainmaker. I blog and market myself, and bring in the calls -- then parcel out the leads to my team. Blogging here on AR has been a nice plus and has gotten me referrals, clients who found me on localism and through my blog, and great friendships.

Makes me think of the Burt Lancaster movie, The Rainmaker. Burt was what one family called a huckster, but he kept at it until one day he finally made it rain. That Lancaster smile at the end said it all about never quiting until your dreams are fulfilled, even if deep down you forgot about what dreams are made of.

You've made a very fitting analogy and it is certainly a nice perspective. RainCamp and posts like this are why I've signed up to be a RainMaker. I am in awe of those that post such great material here regularly and although I've been a bit slow to get started, there certainly is no shortage of mentors here on ActiveRain to draw inspiration from!

The analogy is fitting to be sure. Now all we have to do is get rid of the "used car salesman" and "snake oil salesman" analogies and we'll be doing great. I try to use this medium to help educate the public as well as show some humanity and compassion.

Brad,

Without AR and all of the 'rainmaking' blogs and knowledge that has been shared, I believe that many of people in the business would have thrown in the towel awhile ago. AR gives hope to a parched landscape, much like the belief in the power of the raindance did to native tribes many moons ago.

Brad,

Love the post and AR.  What makes it so wonderful to me is the grouping of folks with half-full cup mentality of making things happen.  It gives off great energy that we can make it happen.  It's no wonder so many are drawn to this "light" of RAIN.

Let's keep that RAIN pouring!  All the best, Michelle

Posted by Michelle Francis Realtor Buckhead Atlanta Homes for Sale & Lease (Tim Francis Realty) over 2 years ago

Loreena - Rainmakers were people who danced for rain during the most difficult times of drought and loss of crops and life.  This post requires you to do nothing, and yet everything you're doing.  Our industry and people have suffered through a Real Estate drought and they need "us" rainmakers to "dance" for rain.  It's just an analogy, a metaphor, nothing more than an observation that correlates the two types of droughts.

What you are required to do is up to you as a "RainMaker", (as in the dancer, not the AR membership status) a person who makes things happen, an individual that looks at the rose and not the thorn, a human being that cares about people and their circumstance.  Dance, Pray, Laugh, Smile, Pay it Forward, Help Others, Help members, help anyone you see or believe needs it.

You are already doing these things and that's what makes you and all the others here "RainMakers" who Dance for "RAIN!" capish? :-))

Posted by Brad Andersohn (Zillow - Outreach Manager) over 2 years ago

We came into 2010 with a very positive outlook this year.  It was very obvious reading everyones blogs that everyone active in the AR community wanted to bring about positive change and create a driving force that would pull the commoner along with us "visionaries."  Nice post.

Have you ever seen one of those "rain sticks"...they are long gourd like things...maybe 3 feetish the ones I have seen and when you tilt them back and forth, the insides rattle....we have the power to do more than rattle...make good noise...inform, persuade, invite...and are grateful for this forum that enables us to do all of that...everywhere...all the time !

Brad,

I myself owe so much to Dancin in the Rain.  Although my thoughts go to Gene Kelly and his moves instead of your analogy.  Because I do not see the drought. Just like back in the day it is just a matter of growing a different crop.

Hi Brad, I just started a group called the Power of Active Rain. I am thinking that this would be a great place for people to share the Power of Rainmakers together and alone. Active Rain definitely has a place of its own out in the cyberworld.  I am still amazed at the amount of people who do not know about it!

ActiveRain has helped keep the pieces together in my business. And the truth is, I haven't recieved this many leads since I was working for a company that bought them for me! Ar is the liquid that helps many of our real estate plants grow.

Love AR for many reasons!  I think all of the rainmakers have one common bond that holds them together and each has their own unique fertilizer they add to the mix to make the crops grow!

Brad- feels as if I'm always saying "Thank You' to you but that's because you're always showering us with useful information, inspiration and a great big bucketful of support.  I tell everyone that ActiveRain has helped me more than any other social media, website or group.  My leads this year have all come from my internet presence and I know I owe that to ActiveRain and what it has taught me about the gold old "Google juice".  My connection with fellow Stagers has given me all the benefits of working in a larger company where I can bounce ideas off fellow workers, but without the hassle. They say all living things need water to survive; well you certainly can get it here.

Great post Brad! It reminded me of the Burt Lancaster film by the same name. In the end you see it raining (by his hand) and teardrops and raindrops are running down his face. His experssion is one of sheer bliss. Thanks for the history lesson!

What great responses.  This community makes a difference in their own communities.  It's obvious that those who contribute care about the industry, their community, and the good of the whole.  Thanks for bringing us all together.

Back in the days of the American Indians, they had a rain dance.  How did it work?  Because they continued to dance until it rained.  That is what we must do.  Dance until it rains.

Thanks for putting my lil ole comment up there... but it is so true...  I told Bob a long time ago if it wasn't for this place I might have not made it. He said it was because of me.   I got a story to tell....later!

Brad - I've been dancing since I committed to the power of ActiveRain 11 months ago. My business partner (and Dad) told me right after Christmas 'I'll do whatever you want, just don't stop blogging!'. It literally saved us from financial defeat, as I've testified in posts before.

Few things have had a more substantive positive impact on our industry than ActiveRain. It has been the virtual schoolroom that has introduced many of us to the paradigm shift of Web 2.0, empowered us to confidently embrace emerging technology, and fostered a wealth of deep, meaningful relationships.

Brad, I am a bit late to the party. What a wonderful, wonderful write up. I believe with your strong guidance through the trials and tribulations of the Internet, that you are the biggest rainmaker of us all...to go back even farther, 'teach a man to fish'...and that's what you do. Brad, you are always busy teaching us. My sincere thanks.

I just hope that the AR Gods don't sell out this wonderful network to Google or Yahoo and make a gazillion bucks.:::::: sarcasm ::::::

You're always inspirational, Brad. It's a marvel that the wise folks at AR were smart enough to hire you to build community here. My feeling is that anyone dancing today is going to be a market dominator when the good times return. Paying your dues on AR today will pay off in more business tomorrow.

Aloha Brad,

Nice Article, and I would agree that since I been on Activerain my out look on how I do business has completely changed.  Social Media does work, I have a couple clients flying in next month to purchase properties. One thing I do disagree with is the blame part.  I feel we need to kick some ass at the election polls and clean up the mess on both sides. Nice article, always moving forward.

Thanks for your uplifting post Brad.  I just finished reading "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan, a novel about the survivors of the Dust Bowl, and what we are going through is not near as tough as what those people went through.
