ActiveRain Announces Listings

ActiveRain has done it again!  We've added yet another feature to enhance the AR Community.  Members now have the option of posting Listings!

Here's how:

1.  Go to http://activerain.com/action/listings and click New Listing
2.  Upload photos, enter the address, description and stats
3.  Click Save Listing
4.  Click Activate

I'm sure you're thinking to yourself, "It can't be that easy can it?"  Yes, my friends it is.

A few clarifications:

You may have up to 20 listings at any time.  Each listing will be active for 30 days.  This is to keep any stale information from being displayed.  If you make any changes to the listing, update the price, add a picture etc. the 30 days will reactivate from that day.

Each listing may have up to 20 photos.  Photos must be 960x440 at a minimum.  We encourage you to take the pictures from your digital camera to optimize clarity.

One of the following browsers must be used to post listings:  Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 8.

Listings will appear on the new Community Pages and as an added bonus of RainMaker status your listings will appear on the sidebar of your blog.

I hope everyone takes advantage of this new feature!

Let it Rain!

Kerrie - great news! Is this going to impact our ability to post listings to regular blogs as well?

Thanks.

We like...now just to find the time to upload them all!  Another reason to pull consumers here...and for those agents that don't join...their loss and our gain!  Woo hoo!

Thanks!

I love the idea, but do wonder, like the first comment from Jose, if this will affect our ability to post listings to our regular blog roll. Also:

  • Why only 20 listings at a time?
  • Thirty days seems a short time span to give for active listings.
  • Why is the photo size requirement so large?

I am not complaining, it just seems there are some stipulations that may not work for agents.

For starters, if I have 172 listings, hard to Titanic life boat, decide which ones stay or go. Can't we piggy back and do more for the 193,000 members that do none? The image size...realtor.com standard is 512x400 same as our Maine mls. Using a standard not a who new 960x440 min makes a lot more work. Especially because we are not going to blow up the smaller size we have and total reshoot of a property. The larger pictures load slower even when optimized for speed. Think the side arm realty listing cookie jar is a great idea. Just need an industry standard like beta, vhs to run with saving everyone time, achieving same result. Tried twice to load and would not activate...hmmm (digging out wrenches, blow torch, jack hammer)

We need to find a way to get listings fed to Activerain.  If Zillow can do it, then Activerain should be able to figure out how to do it.

As a high-volume listing broker, I don't want to do double data entry.

#2 says" HMMMM. Is ActiveRain making the move from agent facing to consumer facing....?"

has ChangingStreets.com been living UNDER a rock?   They've been saying this was coming since 2006.  Localism introduced in 2006 was consumer facing... Localism reintroduced in 2008 consumer facing.  Community pages are consumer facing... the concept of RainMaker is consumer facing....

I have to go see ChangingStreets.com ActiveRain blog.

Define "Your" Tom, as in your listing?  I only ask because with most states, the listing is NEVER the agent's, but the brokerage.  If you can only post your listings, it would be very, very small.  Semantics, I know, but defining "yours" is difficult.

Question I started to put one in based on the address it offers to let me list it in Columbus, in Columbus neighborhoods.

Address is Columbus Ohio 43235

This listing will be displayed in: Columbus, OH and Franklin County, OH. Community:

None on the list match.  The neighborhood for this property is in Worthington.  Will a listing NOT go on a community page if  I leave it None?

Roger #30,

By "your listings" I mean listings that are your personal listings (taken by you as an agent of the brokerage and have your MLS ID in the MLS). Too many times my listings are taken and posted on Craigslist and other sites. This is a violation of our local MLS rules and since they take my photos, they are violating my Copyright. Note that AR is not an IDX compliant website when it comes to listings.

Tom

PS - Our MLS allows me to give other agents written permission to advertise my listings not that I've ever allowed it.

I was pretty excited about this thought until I went to use it.  I went to plug in my recent listing and it's impossible to do, because it's a plot of land and not a home.  Although you can enter "0" for bedrooms, it doesn work for bathrooms or square footage.  Also you can't use decimals in the "lot" section, which I foresee causing a lot of trouble.  Why?  Let's say you have a 0.5 acre lot.  When most agents put that in, they're going to wind up listing it as a 5 acre lot.  That's dangerous territory.  Of course, the agents could enter it in as square footage, but not every agent (and this comes from experience in the San Antonio MLS) knows that an acre is 43,560 square feet and therefore a 0.5 acre lot could be listed as 21,780 square feet.  Of course, even if they did list it this way, there should be a standard (or a check box for acres vs. square feet).

Good idea, but not usable for me under these current conditions.  I'll be looking for the announcement of v2.0.

I had to chuckle at the comment about only being able to upload 20 listings.  Most of us would not be so lucky to have that concern.

If I had more than 20 listings I'd upload the ones that are priced well and have motivated sellers.  You could use this as a feature in your listing presentation.

Also are you asking that members use this tool to post listings rather than post in the normal blog roll?

I hope so.  Listings are really for consumers to see and since we have members from all over the U.S. and Canada, all your lovely listings aren't what I'm here to see.

I want to see some meaty blogs that will garner lots of comments from your fellow members.

Not impressed so far. I tried to upload a photo and it's too small. It's 500x350. That's plenty big enough for all my uses except AR.

I personally have 75 listings. Yes, that's me. Alone.

30 days is too short. I understand STALE but 30 days is not long enough.

Sorry to pop your bubble but as I've been saying for years, Localism is flawed in my area and I just don't have the time to list all the errors in there. They have tiny neighborhoods (10 homes) listed as a separate town, townships wrong, etc.

Posted by Roland Woodworth,SFR - Clarksville Short Sale and Foreclosure Resource (Keller Williams Realty) over 1 year ago

You still have the ability to blog about your listings in addition to this new feature.  However, it is intended to take the place of such blogs.

ActiveRain made the move to consumer facing when the site was born.  We have over 2 million consumer visitors monthly.

All members of ActiveRain have the ability to use the new Listings feature.  The bonus of being a RainMaker is your Listings will show on the right hand side of your blog roll.

If you do not pick a community the Listing will not display.

There is not a way to delete a Listing that is pending at this time.  For now, please refrain from clicking "Activate".

As always, we continue to listen to our community's comments and concerns to enhance this new release.  Please, if you have comments or concerns leave them here on the post and our team will thoroughly review them.  We've always relied on our community for feedback and this time will be no different.  Thanks everyone!

Let us know when you get it fixed, before it gets rolled out and ask for input on the set up, fields. Remember not all LOT fields mean a fraction of an acre. The rural brokers need different ones than a home home home, condo city lister. We have 59 multiple acre properties of just land, on lakes, rivers, farms, woodlots. Where do those go? Instead of bath room count features like "5280" on "water" and "10,000" on "Road Frntge" If not land, why have rural brokers represented in AR fraternity in rural states like Maine? Will the field allow video link with html or just note pad for copy, no html? Please tell me the blog posts with our images, copy, links, embedded video are being "phased out". Why?

Because you're signed in to your own account when editing the links that are being posted are not working.  DO NOT POST a link like this http://activerain.com/action/listings/edit/14

It's very easy to load the pictures and fill in the blanks, however it won't activate.  It keeps saying that the address is not valid... it's an established address.

Hi Kerrie - This appears that it will be a great feature once a few issues are worked out including those that others noted above as well as:

- in my area, people either don't enter square footage or enter a range

- the sellers have the option NOT to display their address on the internet, thus, we would only display the area of the city (it seems that you require a full address which conflicts with those who want their listing on the internet but not the exact address)

- ability to display Canadian listings (I'm not sure if this is an issue re:  postal codes vs. zip codes)

- I am not clear what "year" means for one of the fields.

Great idea!  Tried to upload my first image and was told it's NOT BIG ENOUGH.  Problem:  In many cases I don't have a larger size as they are automatically resized for my website.  Noticed that many others are having a sizing issue.  Perhaps AR could reduce the size to a more standard listing and help us avoid all the extra work or inability to post.

Posted by Donna Galinsky (Pugatch Realty Corp | Five Towns Long Island, NY Real Estate) over 1 year ago
  • Will this work in towns where there are few to zero communities listed?  None of the towns I work in and have listings in have multiple communities listed since we don't search that way in the MLS.
  • In my MLS we just finally implemented a square footage section that is required, but we do not have to put an actual number in it - we can put 0.  As I never measure sq. ft. and only use the tax records, which don't always show it, I can see from these comments that this will be a problem.
  • With lot sizes we usually put the actual size, sounds like there is an issue with this.
  • I also have to chime in about the photo size requirements and how some of these landscape photos appear.  I always use large sizes as our MLS reduces them automatically and my single property website wants large sizes for their HD display.  But the way these landscape sizes are required, forget about using any vertical type photos, which I use for things like tall fireplaces and sometimes bathrooms.  One of the displayed listings obviously didn't use their original photos or resized up from a smaller size as they were so distorted and blurry I wouldn't want to have that on my blog as it looks bad.

These are suggestions based on comments I've read and how I know it will affect my own listings.  Because of the multiple MLS's with different rules and requirements, you need to have some fields more optional or allow different entries (such as lot sizes and square footage).  And if a specific community, or subdivision, is a requirement, then I won't be able to use it at all.

Hi Kerrie,

I missed this post this morning, but had found the link on the main page  of AR when I logged on..

Thought I had discovered something :)  So I played with it, uploaded a listing, and blogged about the new link to add listings on AR.. :)

The listing I put on would only let me upload 1 photo.  It would stall out whenever I tried to upload a second photo.  I let it sit there and spin for about 30 minutes while I did some other things.. came back and it was still trying to upload the second photo, so stopped it.

http://activerain.com/listings/OK/McCurtain%20County/Idabel/74745/se-jackson-st-denison

http://activerain.com/action/listings/edit/1013

For some reason I also have two that are blank and I haven't figured out how to delete them...

Thanks!

Went back and tried to upload the second photo to the first listing with no luck.  It just stalls out with no error message...

The second listing that I input, finally got it to activate.  Some roads have had recent name changes.  It really doesn't matter what the address is but have to use the road name that is on a Google map.

The square footage field should not be a required field for those of us that don't want to take on that liability.

Just so you know, there seems to be an issue with GoogleChrome.  For some reason, it is not reading the price field properly, so it will not let you click the "save listing" button.  Just figured I'd give a head's up, because I'm not sure if it has been noted yet.  Great addition, team ActiveRain!

Uploaded 3 listings yesterday and I had no problem with the process itself. I had to resize the pics using picnik which I thought was a pain and I left the square foot field blank because nothing I entered displayed correctly. Still, I think it's a great feature.

Correction to my comment above. It was the lot size that I had to leave blank, not sqft.

From the comments, it sounds like the system is not ready for prime time and is somewhat of a pain. Is there no way to syndicate from the MLS rather than making us input listings manually?

This is a great feature; however, judging from some of the comments, there still are a few glitches. I'm having a problem with the size of my pictures.

I thought our industry has gone beyond manually inputting listings into a 3rd party site.  Have you heard of ListHub?  Can't you just get a feed from them and save all of us this trouble?

Kerrie -

The listings within a Community Page need to be ordered in some manner, say descending by price.

Is AR going to be syndicating these listings?  If so, to what sites?

This will be excellent when improved.

I assume you are trying some vertical integration here....i.e. taking syndication of listings posted on AR out of the hands of the Postlets and RainBirds of the world.

I am confident the addition of "homes for sale" will enhance the SEO of the community pages - which in my area are already beginning to show (sporadically) on page one of Google.

Thanks for the new feature.  How do we get the listings on our outside blog?

Posted by Anonymous over 1 year ago

I think this is a nice feature, but.

I notice that the more we do on the internet, the more TIME it takes us.  More internet sites for listings etc. just means more work for us!!!!

When there were one or two sites, I liked it much better.

I have a lot of listings and I spend many hours on the internet just trying to get the exposure for them.

Sometimes less is MORE.

Posted by Kathleen Koulouris (Coldwell Banker Elite) over 1 year ago

Well my dear, I finally got the listings to load. At first the system didn't like my version of Internet Explorer. It finally loaded with Firefox, and I got the first of my lsitings loaded,.

Here are a couple:

If not for the problems I'm sure I would have been one of your point winners. Damn

As an interim measure, we've adjusted the way listings are displayed on hyper-local pages. Listings are now displayed in the left column and are only visible to consumers (non-logged in users).

I love this feature which makes me look really good.  I do agree the 960 x 440 is incredibly non-standard.  There are plenty of  broken gifs in the neighbourhood sections, such as https://activerain.com/states/AB/cities/Calgary/communities/Huntington%20Hills   I love the way the pictures scroll.  Thank you activerain!

My listings aren't working right.

The lots can't be posted at all, and the houses won't show the pictures for me to edit them.

Is there a glich, or am I doing something wrong?

Posted by Jean-Paul Peron Outer Banks houses & Land for sale (The Outer Banks Real Estate Copmpany) over 1 year ago

At this time the listing tool is only for homes for sale and won't take lots.  You must edit your picture before you upload them.  Make sure they are 960x440 exactly.  www.picnik.com is a great tool to use to accomplish this.

Posted by Kerrie Greenhalgh (ActiveRain, Community Manager) over 1 year ago

I'm sorry about the confusion. By "editing" I meant changing their order around.

If you would allow it to accept 0 bedrooms and 0 bathrooms the lot listings should work fine.

Hi Kerrie,

I'm not sure if you're monitoring this post any longer, but I've looked at the new LISTINGS feature and wonder how it can be SEO'd properly.  From what I see, I think we'd actually get more readability by creating a blog post, instead.  Your thoughts?

Hello Kerrie, Left an email message for AR a few days ago with no response so will try again by leaving a message here- for some reason we are unable to edit or remove the last 2 listings that are blank (no photos or info on them?) on our listings edit page - could you please look into this and delete these 2 blank ones at the end as we have new listings to add and are up to the 20 limit - if you can remove the last 2 blank ones, we can add 2 more - thanks!!

Does anyone know why my listings never go past "pending" and nobody has ever seen them (so I assume they're not active)  They also show reactivate so they were activated.  I'm just a bit confused as to whether listing on here does anything?
